Amo hosts third annual veterans resource fair and barbecue in Warren

The Rhode Island Democrat's office said the event connected veterans and military families with service organizations, health care providers and support groups from across the state.

U.S. Rep. Gabe Amo, D-R.I., hosted his third annual Veterans Resource Fair and Barbecue at Pete Sepe Pavilion in Warren, R.I., on Saturday, bringing together veterans, military families and organizations that serve them, his office said.

Veterans and their families shared a barbecue lunch and met with veterans service organizations, advocacy groups, health care providers, and education and support groups from across Rhode Island, according to the office.

“We owe Rhode Islanders who have served our nation in uniform and their families a lifetime of gratitude for their sacrifices in defense of our values and democracy,” Amo said. He said his office could help veterans who are having trouble getting help from a federal agency. Amo represents Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District.

The office also pointed to Amo's record on veterans issues. It said he signed a discharge petition May 21 seeking to force a House vote on the Major Richard Star Act, which the office said would ensure that combat-disabled veterans receive full benefits. On Sept. 16, 2025, he led the state's congressional delegation in a letter asking Veterans Affairs Secretary Douglas Collins to explain the loss of VA employees nationwide and to update the status of the department's Rhode Island workforce, the office said.

Amo voted July 3, 2025, against what his office called “Trump's Big, Ugly Law,” which it said “gutted SNAP, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act.” The office said an estimated 3,000 Rhode Island veterans received SNAP benefits between 2021 and 2023, and that 4,200 were enrolled in Medicaid as of 2023.

The office said Amo introduced a bipartisan bill with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse on Feb. 13, 2025, to posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to members of the First Rhode Island Regiment, which it described as America's first integrated military unit. On May 15, 2025, he introduced a resolution to establish “Vets Get Outside Day” in support of veteran mental health, according to the office.

Amo held his first veterans barbecue Aug. 28, 2024, and his second Sept. 14, 2025.
